# What happened to Assistants API?

**Replaced on 26 AUG 2026.** OpenAI shut down the Assistants API and directs developers to the Responses API and Conversations API. Source: [OpenAI developer docs](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/assistants/migration).

## What this means

On 26 AUG 2026, OpenAI made the Assistants API unavailable and required developers to move new integrations to the Responses API. The replacement maps Assistants to Prompts, Threads to Conversations, Runs to Responses, and Run steps to Items. Developers should use OpenAI's migration guide to rebuild their integration around Responses and conversation objects.

## What to use now

OpenAI points users to [Responses API](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/responses/overview) and [Conversations API](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/resources/conversations/methods/create).
