# Context7 alternatives for library docs in your coding agent

Updated 2026-10-03. First published 2026-10-01.

The best overall Context7 alternative is DeepWiki, a free MCP server from Cognition that answers questions about any public GitHub repository with no API key. The best free pick for Microsoft, Azure and .NET work is Microsoft Learn, and the best open source option that runs locally is Grounded Docs, which we do not list yet. We compared 2 listed servers and 3 unlisted ones on free tier, license, local use and docs coverage; facts checked on 2026-10-01.

| Name | Best for | Made by | License | Notes | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [DeepWiki](https://cookiesforai.app/mcp/deepwiki) | Questions about any public GitHub repo, free with no key | Cognition (makers of Devin) | See publisher | Free | 2026-10-02 |
| [Microsoft Learn](https://cookiesforai.app/mcp/microsoft-learn) | Official Microsoft, Azure and .NET docs and code samples | Microsoft | CC-BY-4.0 | Free | 2026-10-02 |

## Where Context7 stands on 2026-10-01

Context7 is Upstash's MCP server for current, version-specific library docs, and the most starred server in its category, with 62,576 GitHub stars on 2026-10-01. It keeps to two tools: one resolves a library name to an ID, the other returns doc snippets and code examples for the version you name. Three facts send people looking elsewhere. The Free plan has a monthly call limit, and more calls and private repositories need paid seats ([current prices](https://context7.com/plans)). Only the MCP server code is MIT; the backend, parser and crawler are private, so you cannot run the whole thing yourself. And Context7 says its library entries are community-contributed and it cannot vouch for each one. If none of these matters to you, Context7 remains a sound choice, with documented setup for more than 40 clients. Details: [Context7 MCP server](/mcp/context7).

## DeepWiki: best overall, free for public repos

DeepWiki is an MCP server from Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent, for developers who want their agent to understand an open-source project before changing code that uses it. Where Context7 serves curated doc snippets, DeepWiki serves wiki pages it generated from a repository's code, plus an ask tool that answers a free-form question grounded in that repo. Its strength is the price and setup: Cognition's docs describe a free remote service with no authentication, so one URL works in Claude Code, Cursor, Claude.ai, Devin Desktop and the OpenAI API (docs read 2026-10-01). Its limit is coverage: it reads public repositories only, its index can lag behind the latest commits, and it answers about code rather than a library's official docs for a given version. Private repos need a paid Devin account and a separate server. There is no public source repository, so it is free but not open source. Details: [DeepWiki MCP server](/mcp/deepwiki).

## Microsoft Learn: best free pick for Microsoft docs

Microsoft Learn is Microsoft's official MCP server over its own technical documentation, for developers writing code against Azure SDKs, .NET or other Microsoft products. Its strength is a trusted source at no cost: three tools search the docs, fetch any Learn page as Markdown, and find official code samples with a language filter, and Microsoft runs it with no API key, login or sign-up (README, 2026-10-01). Answers about service limits, region availability or API signatures come from current first-party pages, and a URL parameter caps how many tokens search returns. Visual Studio 2022 and 2026 ship with it built in, and Microsoft documents setup for Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini CLI and more. Its limit is scope: it covers Microsoft's documentation only, not npm or PyPI libraries, so it replaces Context7 only for a Microsoft stack. The MicrosoftDocs/mcp repo had 1,922 GitHub stars on 2026-10-01; its CC-BY-4.0 license covers the docs content, and the server is a hosted service. Details: [Microsoft Learn MCP server](/mcp/microsoft-learn).

## Open source and local options we do not list yet

Three more servers do Context7's job and are worth a look. We have not written pages for them, and the facts below come from their GitHub repositories, read on 2026-10-01.

- [Grounded Docs](https://github.com/arabold/docs-mcp-server) (arabold/docs-mcp-server) is MIT-licensed, had 1,779 stars, and is the one to pick if you want everything local. It indexes docs from websites, GitHub, npm, PyPI, local folders and archives on your own machine, so queries target the library version you use and your code stays on your network. It needs Node.js 22 or newer, and you build the index yourself.
- [GitMCP](https://github.com/idosal/git-mcp) (idosal/git-mcp) is Apache-2.0, had 8,446 stars, and turns any GitHub project into a remote docs server at gitmcp.io with no sign-up; you can also self-host it. Its last push was on 2026-05-08.
- [Ref](https://github.com/ref-tools/ref-tools-mcp) (ref-tools/ref-tools-mcp) is an MIT-licensed server, 1,175 stars, for a hosted docs search at ref.tools that aims to return as few tokens as possible and covers private docs. We did not read its pricing.

## How we compared

We looked for MCP servers that give a coding agent current documentation or code context, the job Context7 does, and checked them for the three things people who leave Context7 ask for: free use, open source code and running locally. We read each server's README, docs and pricing page on 2026-10-01, and took stars, licenses and free tiers from our item pages, checked the same day. Only two servers in our directory fit; the [GitHub MCP server](/mcp/github) can read any repository's code, but it is built for issues, pull requests and Actions, so we left it out. We did not run the same coding task with each server, and we did not measure how accurate or current their answers were.

## How to choose

- If your agent works with open-source libraries and you want a free tool with no key, choose DeepWiki.
- If you build on Azure, .NET or other Microsoft products, add Microsoft Learn; it pairs with Context7 or DeepWiki for everything else.
- If your code or docs must stay on your machine, run Grounded Docs locally.
- If you want version-specific snippets for thousands of libraries and its monthly call limit is enough, stay on Context7's Free plan.

## Questions people ask

### Is there a free alternative to Context7?

Yes. DeepWiki and Microsoft Learn both run free with no API key or account (docs read 2026-10-01). DeepWiki covers public GitHub repositories and Microsoft Learn covers Microsoft's own documentation. GitMCP and Grounded Docs are free and open source too. Context7 itself has a Free plan for public libraries.

### Is there an open source Context7 alternative that runs locally?

Grounded Docs, the MIT-licensed arabold/docs-mcp-server, runs on your own machine and indexes docs from websites, GitHub, npm, PyPI and local folders; its README calls itself an open source alternative to Context7. Neither server we list runs locally: DeepWiki and Microsoft Learn are hosted services.

### Is Context7 open source?

Partly. The Context7 MCP server code is MIT-licensed, but Upstash keeps the backend, parser and crawler private (repository read 2026-10-01). The docs index you query is Upstash's hosted service.
