# Is there an MCP server for Figma?

Updated 2026-10-03. First published 2026-10-02.

Yes: the Figma MCP server is the official MCP server published by Figma, hosted at `https://mcp.figma.com/mcp`, with a desktop version that runs locally inside the Figma app, checked on 2026-10-02. Figma introduced it as the Dev Mode MCP server; its docs now call it the Figma MCP server and recommend the hosted one for most people. It is listed in the official MCP Registry as `com.figma.mcp/mcp`.

## How to connect the Figma MCP server

Figma's developer docs give setup for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Xcode, and its GitHub guide adds Gemini CLI. The commands below are copied from those pages on 2026-10-02. Each client then asks you to sign in to Figma with OAuth.

Claude Code, Figma's plugin with the server and skills (Figma's recommended route):

```bash
claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official
```

Claude Code, server only:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
```

Codex CLI (the Codex app installs Figma from its Plugins list instead):

```bash
codex mcp add figma --url https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
```

Cursor, typed in the agent chat:

```text
/add-plugin figma
```

VS Code, in `mcp.json` (MCP in VS Code needs GitHub Copilot enabled):

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "figma": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Gemini CLI, then run `/mcp auth figma` inside `gemini`:

```bash
gemini extensions install https://github.com/figma/mcp-server-guide
```

In Xcode 27 beta, open Settings, Intelligence, Plug-ins, choose Add from URL and enter `https://github.com/figma/mcp-server-guide`. The desktop server runs at `http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp` once you enable it in Dev Mode in the Figma desktop app.

## What it can do, what it costs, and its limit

The Figma MCP server reads designs for code: `get_design_context` returns a React and Tailwind version of a selected frame that the agent adapts to your stack, and `get_variable_defs`, `get_screenshot` and `get_metadata` add tokens, an image and the node tree. It also writes: `use_figma` builds and edits frames, components, variables and auto layout, `generate_figma_design` captures a live web page into Figma in select clients, and `generate_diagram` draws FigJam diagrams. Code Connect tools map Figma components to your own.

The server has no separate price, but tool calls depend on plan and seat (developer docs, read 2026-10-02). The Starter plan and View or Collab seats get a small number of calls, Dev or Full seats on paid plans get far more, and some write tools, such as `create_new_file`, are exempt from the limits. Writing to the canvas is free during its beta, and Figma says it will become a usage-based paid feature. Check Figma's developer docs for the current limits before you plan around them.

The real limit is the client list: only clients in Figma's MCP Catalog can connect, so a new or niche agent may be refused even with a valid account.

## Other Figma MCP servers

[GLips/Figma-Context-MCP](https://github.com/GLips/Figma-Context-MCP), published as Framelink MCP for Figma, is a community server: MIT, 15,944 GitHub stars, last push 2026-09-18 (checked 2026-10-02). It runs locally through npx (package `figma-developer-mcp`) with a Figma personal access token, and trims Figma API responses down to layout and styling data before the model sees them. Its two tools read file data and download images. Pick it when your agent is not in Figma's catalog, or when reading designs is all you need. It does not write to the canvas, and Figma does not publish it.

## Questions people ask

### Is the Figma MCP server free?

It has no separate price, but how many tool calls you get depends on plan and seat (Figma developer docs, read 2026-10-02): the Starter plan and View or Collab seats get a small number, Dev or Full seats on paid plans far more. Writing to the canvas is free during its beta and will become usage-based and paid.

### Can any MCP client connect to the Figma MCP server?

No. Only clients listed in Figma's MCP Catalog can connect, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code. Developers of other clients can join Figma's waitlist.
