# Is there an MCP server for Jira?

Updated 2026-10-03. First published 2026-10-02.

Yes: Jira is covered by the Atlassian Rovo MCP server, the official MCP server published by Atlassian, hosted at `https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp` for Atlassian Cloud sites, checked on 2026-10-02. There is no Jira-only server from Atlassian: the same endpoint also serves Confluence, Jira Service Management, Bitbucket Cloud, Compass and Loom. It is listed in the official MCP Registry as `com.atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server`, version 2.0.0.

## How to connect the Atlassian MCP server

Atlassian's README lists ChatGPT, Codex CLI and Desktop, Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Docker, Kiro and Amazon Quick Suite as supported clients. These commands are copied from Atlassian's README and setup guide on 2026-10-02.

Claude Code, then run `/mcp` in a session to sign in:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http atlassian https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp
```

Codex CLI:

```bash
codex mcp add atlassian --url https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp
```

Other clients install it from their own directories, per the README: in VS Code, search `@mcp Atlassian` in the Extensions view; in Cursor, add the Atlassian plugin from the Cursor marketplace; in Claude Desktop, open Settings, Extensions, Browse extensions, Plugins and search for Atlassian; in Codex Desktop, install Atlassian Rovo from Plugins or Connectors; in ChatGPT, use Atlassian's Add to ChatGPT link. In Windsurf, add a custom server with `serverUrl` set to the v2 URL. For Gemini CLI and any other client, use the server URL above. The old SSE endpoint stopped being supported after 2026-06-30.

## What it can do for Jira, what it costs, and its limit

For Jira, the Atlassian MCP server searches and summarizes work items, creates them in bulk from notes, updates fields and moves issues between statuses. Organization admins grant tools by permission group (`read_jira`, `write_jira`, `search_jira`), and `delete_jira` and `manage_jira` stay off until an admin enables them. The server shows agents a few primary tools and lets them discover the rest; `?tools=all` on the URL returns the full list for gateways.

Sign-in is OAuth 2.1 in a browser. For headless use, a personal API token or a service account key works once an admin enables token auth. Jira Service Management tools accept token auth only.

Every Atlassian Cloud plan has access at no extra charge, with hourly call limits that grow with the plan and, on Premium and Enterprise, with the number of users (Atlassian's page, read 2026-10-02). Enriched Teamwork Graph calls, such as `searchAtlassian`, use Rovo credits; paid Jira plans include a monthly credit allowance, and Atlassian bills extra usage from 2026-12-03.

The real limit is Cloud only: the server needs an Atlassian Cloud site, so Jira Server and Data Center are not covered. Atlassian also states it does not currently meet FedRAMP or HIPAA requirements.

## Other Jira MCP servers

[sooperset/mcp-atlassian](https://github.com/sooperset/mcp-atlassian) is a community server: MIT, 5,961 GitHub stars, last push 2026-09-19 (checked 2026-10-02). It runs locally with `uvx mcp-atlassian`, covers Jira and Confluence, and supports both Cloud and Server or Data Center, using an API token on Cloud and a Personal Access Token on Data Center. Pick it for a self-managed Jira, or when you want the server on your own machine. Atlassian does not publish it.

## Questions people ask

### Is the Atlassian MCP server free for Jira?

Connecting costs nothing extra on any Atlassian Cloud plan, Free included, with hourly call limits that grow with the plan (read 2026-10-02). Enriched Teamwork Graph calls such as searchAtlassian use Rovo credits from the organization's pool.

### Does it work with Jira Data Center?

No. It needs an Atlassian Cloud site. For Jira Server or Data Center, the community sooperset/mcp-atlassian server supports Personal Access Tokens.
