Some clients do not expand ${JINA_API_KEY}; then paste the real key (it starts with jina_). Clients without remote server support connect through the mcp-remote proxy, as in the Codex example.

## What it does

The Jina AI MCP server is a hosted server that connects an AI agent to four Jina APIs. The best-known tool reads a web page or PDF through Jina Reader and returns it as Markdown, or returns only the passages that answer a question you pass in. Other tools capture a screenshot of a page and estimate when a page was published or last updated.

Jina's search tools cover the open web, web images, arXiv preprints and SSRN papers, which makes the server useful for academic lookups as well as general ones. A PDF tool pulls figures, tables and equations out of papers. Two ranking tools use Jina's Reranker and Embeddings models to sort documents by relevance to a query and to drop near-duplicate strings.

The server runs at mcp.jina.ai and has no local install. You can cut the tool list down with query parameters on the URL, such as include_tags=search,read, which saves context tokens in the agent. Jina AI is now part of Elastic, and the GitHub repo had 869 stars on 2026-10-01.

## When to pick something else

- Search without signing up: search_web, search_arxiv and the ranking tools need a Jina API key, and without one page reading runs at a lower rate limit.
