## Install

Install this skill with the skills CLI:

```
npx skills add microsoft/azure-skills --skill azure-diagnostics
```

Or, in Claude Code, install Microsoft's Azure plugin from Anthropic's official marketplace:

```
/plugin install azure@claude-plugins-official
```

Or, in Gemini CLI, install the Azure extension:

```
gemini extensions install https://github.com/microsoft/azure-skills
```

Or, in GitHub Copilot CLI, add Microsoft's marketplace:

```
/plugin marketplace add microsoft/azure-skills
```

Then install the Azure plugin in Copilot CLI:

```
/plugin install azure@azure-skills
```

The plugin and extension routes install all of Microsoft's Azure skills together with the Azure MCP Server and Foundry MCP. The skills CLI line installs only this skill's instructions, not the MCP servers it calls. In Codex, run codex plugin marketplace add microsoft/azure-skills, then install azure from /plugins.

## Ask your coding agent

A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first: https://github.com/microsoft/azure-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-diagnostics

```text
Install the agent skill azure-diagnostics from github.com/microsoft/azure-skills.
```

## What it does

azure-diagnostics is an agent skill from Microsoft for finding out why something on Azure is failing. It gives the agent a fixed order: name the symptom, check Azure resource health, read the logs, look at metrics, then look for recent changes. Where the Azure MCP Server is available, the agent uses AppLens for automated detection and root cause hints, and Azure Monitor to run KQL queries against Log Analytics.

The azure-diagnostics skill routes each service to its own troubleshooting guide. Container Apps covers image pull failures, cold starts, health probes and port mismatches. App Service covers high CPU, failed deployments, crashes and TLS. Functions covers invocation failures, timeouts and missing settings. Separate guides handle AKS clusters and pods, VM RDP and SSH problems with firewalls and credential resets, and Event Hubs and Service Bus SDK errors.

The skill also includes a KQL query library, Azure Resource Graph queries and plain Azure CLI commands for health checks and activity logs, so diagnosis still works without the MCP tools. The agent is asked to record what it found and which fixes it tried.

## When to use it

- Your App Service app is slow, crashing or stuck at high CPU.
- A container app will not start because of image pull or health probe errors.
- Pods in your AKS cluster are pending or in a crash loop.
- You cannot connect to an Azure VM over RDP or SSH.

## When to pick something else

- Deploying or redeploying an app: use azure-deploy from the same repository.

## What it needs

- An Azure subscription and Azure CLI signed in with az login

## Which agents it works in

Microsoft documents it for GitHub Copilot (VS Code, Copilot CLI, IntelliJ IDEA), Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents (listed with the CLI on 2026-10-01).

The skill calls tools from the Azure MCP Server (names starting mcp_azure_mcp). The plugin routes install that server; with the skills CLI alone the agent falls back to the Azure CLI commands the skill also lists.
