# GitHub fix CI

gh-fix-ci is OpenAI's agent skill for failing pull request checks: the agent uses the GitHub CLI to find failing GitHub Actions runs, pulls the logs, summarizes the failure and proposes a fix plan.

## Install

Install the skill with the skills CLI:

```
npx skills add openai/skills --skill gh-fix-ci
```

Or, inside Codex, use the built-in skill installer:

```
$skill-installer gh-fix-ci
```

## Ask your coding agent

A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first: https://github.com/openai/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/.curated/gh-fix-ci

```text
Install the agent skill gh-fix-ci from github.com/openai/skills.
```

## What it does

GitHub fix CI is a skill from OpenAI's skills catalog for a pull request whose checks have gone red. The agent first confirms the GitHub CLI is logged in, finds the pull request for the current branch or the one you name, and lists its checks. It works only on checks that run in GitHub Actions.

For each failing check, a bundled Python script, inspect_pr_checks.py, fetches the run, downloads the job log and cuts out the part around the failure. The script copes with changes in gh field names and falls back to job logs when a run is still in progress. The agent then reports each failing check by name, with its run link and a short log snippet, and says plainly when logs are missing.

The skill keeps a human gate before code changes. The agent drafts a fix plan and waits for your approval, then applies it, summarizes the diff and tests, and asks whether to open a pull request. Afterwards it suggests rerunning the tests and gh pr checks to confirm the fix.

## When to use it

- Your pull request has failing checks and you want the cause found in the logs.
- You want a summary of every red check with the relevant log lines.
- You want the agent to propose a CI fix but not change code until you approve.

## When to pick something else

- Checks that run outside GitHub Actions, such as Buildkite: the skill only reports their link.

## What it needs

- GitHub CLI (gh) logged in with repo and workflow scopes
- Python, for the bundled log script

## Which agents it works in

OpenAI documents it for Codex, Any agent that reads SKILL.md files, through the skills CLI. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents (listed with the CLI on 2026-10-01).

Step 6 tells the agent to draft its plan with a create-plan skill, which lives in the repository's experimental folder, not next to this skill; without it the agent writes the plan inline. OpenAI marked openai/skills deprecated on 2026-06-22 in favour of openai/plugins.

## License

Apache-2.0. The skill folder carries its own Apache-2.0 LICENSE.txt, so you may use, change and share it, including at work.

## Questions people ask

### Is OpenAI's gh-fix-ci skill deprecated?

The repository it lives in, openai/skills, has been marked deprecated in its README since 2026-06-22, with openai/plugins named as the replacement. The skill itself still installs with the skills CLI as of 2026-10-01.

### Does gh-fix-ci change my code on its own?

No. It reads checks and logs, writes a fix plan, and only implements after you approve that plan.
