OpenCode

OpenCode is an open source terminal coding agent by Anomaly that works with 75+ model providers, local models included, and also ships as a desktop app and IDE extension.

What OpenCode does

OpenCode is an open source coding agent with a terminal interface, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, and an extension for VS Code, Cursor, Zed and Windsurf. It has two main agents, Build for making changes and Plan for read-only planning, plus subagents for general work and code exploration. It loads language servers automatically, so the agent sees diagnostics as it edits.

OpenCode is not tied to one model vendor. It connects to 75+ providers through Models.dev, including local models, and you can sign in with a GitHub Copilot account or a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan. Its maker, Anomaly, also sells two optional services: Zen, a pay-as-you-go model gateway, and Go, a subscription for open models.

OpenCode integrates with GitHub: mention /opencode or /oc in an issue or pull request comment and it runs in your GitHub Actions runner and opens a pull request. OpenCode is moving to a v2, and the classic and v2 docs currently describe slightly different config formats.

Who OpenCode is for

  • Developers who want a free, MIT-licensed terminal agent they can use with any model provider
  • People who already pay for GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT and want to use that login in a terminal agent
  • Running local models, or switching between cheap open models and frontier models per task
  • Teams that want an agent triggered from GitHub issue and pull request comments

Who should pick something else

  • People who want one bundled subscription that covers the tool and the models with no setup; Cursor or GitHub Copilot do that
  • Teams that need stable config right now: classic and v2 docs give different MCP config shapes during the v2 move
  • Windows users who avoid WSL: the docs recommend WSL on Windows

OpenCode: one strength, one limit

Strength. OpenCode has 211,260 GitHub stars (2026-10-01), is MIT licensed, and works with 75+ model providers including local models, so the tool itself costs nothing.

Limit. OpenCode is mid-migration to v2, and its classic and v2 docs give different MCP config formats and install scripts, so guides you find may not match your version.

What OpenCode costs

Free and open source under MIT with your own provider key or local models; its maker also sells an optional model gateway and a subscription for open models.

Current prices: opencode.ai . We do not list prices: vendors change them often, so check the maker's own page before you buy.

OpenCode with agent skills and MCP servers

Skills. OpenCode supports Agent Skills natively through a built-in skill tool. It reads project skills from .opencode/skills, .claude/skills and .agents/skills, searching up to the git worktree root, and global skills from ~/.config/opencode/skills, ~/.claude/skills and ~/.agents/skills. The docs do not give a date it was added. The open skills CLI installs OpenCode skills into .agents/skills.

MCP. OpenCode reads MCP servers from opencode.json under the mcp key: "type": "local" with a command array, or "type": "remote" with a url and headers; OAuth for remote servers is handled automatically and opencode mcp auth <name> logs in. The new v2 docs add a command, opencode mcp add <name> --url <url> or opencode mcp add <name> -- <command>, and nest servers under mcp.servers instead.

Questions people ask

Is OpenCode free?

Yes. OpenCode is free and open source under the MIT license; you pay only your model provider, or nothing with local models. Its maker sells optional services: Zen (pay as you go) and Go (a monthly subscription), read on opencode.ai on 2026-10-01.

Can OpenCode use agent skills and MCP servers?

Yes. OpenCode reads Agent Skills from .opencode/skills, .claude/skills or .agents/skills, and connects MCP servers configured under the mcp key in opencode.json.
