Roo Code was an open source coding agent extension for VS Code by Roo Code, Inc.; the extension was shut down on 2026-05-15 and its GitHub repository is archived.
What Roo Code does
Roo Code was an open source AI coding agent for VS Code, originally forked from Cline. It worked with modes such as Code, Architect, Ask and Debug plus custom modes, used your own model keys, and supported MCP servers and Agent Skills.
Roo Code is no longer an active product. The GitHub repository was archived on 2026-05-15, the same day its last commits redirected roocode.com to roomote.dev and removed the roocode.com web app. The README notice says the extension was shut down on May 15 and points users to ZooCode, a community fork, and to Cline. docs.roocode.com now redirects to an archived docs site with the same notice.
Roo Code's last version, 3.54.0, is still listed on the VS Code Marketplace and Open VSX, both last updated on 2026-05-15. Whether it still works with current models was not confirmed. Roomote, at roomote.dev, is a separate cloud agent from the same creators and is not described as a replacement.

Roo Code with agent skills and MCP servers
Skills. Roo Code supported Agent Skills from v3.38.0 (2025-12-27), reading project skills from .roo/skills and .agents/skills and global skills from ~/.roo/skills and ~/.agents/skills. The open skills CLI 1.7.0 still installs Roo Code skills into .roo/skills, but the extension was shut down on 2026-05-15.
MCP. Roo Code read MCP servers from a global mcp_settings.json (Edit Global MCP in its MCP settings view) or a project .roo/mcp.json, under the mcpServers key with command, args, env, alwaysAllow and disabled. The extension was shut down on 2026-05-15, so these settings get no further updates.
