Is there an MCP server for Slack?

Yes: the Slack MCP server is Slack's own hosted MCP server at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp, published by Slack and generally available since 2026-02-17, and agents reach it through an admin-approved Slack app with OAuth (checked 2026-10-02). Slack publishes no server code to self-host, and the server is not listed in the official MCP Registry.

How to connect the Slack MCP server

Slack's docs name four partner clients that connect with no coding: Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cursor and Perplexity. For two of them, Slack's MCP and Skills Plugin, released 2026-07-31, sets up the server plus six Slack skills. The commands below are copied from Slack's plugin docs on 2026-10-02.

Claude Code, typed inside a Claude Code session:

/plugin install slack@claude-plugins-official

Cursor, typed in Cursor's agent chat:

/add-plugin slack

Both ask you to sign in to your Slack workspace with OAuth on first use. Codex takes the same plugin with codex plugin marketplace add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin and then codex plugin add slack@slack, but Slack says it installs the skills only there, because the MCP server is not available in Codex yet. Gemini CLI, OpenCode and other agents can add the skills with npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin -y -a <agent>, also without the server. Slack's MCP docs do not name ChatGPT as a client.

To connect your own agent, register a Slack app, keep its fixed app ID, and use its client ID and client secret in Slack's OAuth flow. The server speaks Streamable HTTP only; Slack does not support SSE or Dynamic Client Registration, and PKCE is available for desktop clients.

What the Slack MCP server can do, what it costs, and its limit

The Slack MCP server searches messages, files, users, channels and custom emoji; reads full channel histories and threads; sends, schedules and drafts messages; creates channels and DMs; adds and reads reactions; creates, updates and reads canvases; works with Slack lists; uploads files; and reads user profiles and channel members. Each action runs as the signed-in user, with user-token scopes such as search:read.public for search and chat:write for sending.

Slack's MCP docs state no separate price and no plan requirement for the server (read 2026-10-02). Rate limits follow the Slack Web API tiers for each tool, with special limits for message search and sending.

The real limit is admin approval. Only apps published in the Slack Marketplace or internal to your organization may call the server; unlisted apps are refused. Your workspace admin must approve the client's app before you can sign in, and MCP activity shows up in Slack's audit logs.

Other Slack MCP servers

korotovsky/slack-mcp-server is the most-starred community server: MIT, 1,852 GitHub stars, last push 2026-07-16 (checked 2026-10-02). It runs locally over stdio, SSE or HTTP, covers DMs and group DMs, and keeps posting off until you enable it. It can run with OAuth tokens or with session tokens from your browser and no app install, which skips admin approval; check your workspace's policy before using that mode. Pick it when you need a local server or your client is not one of Slack's partners. Slack does not publish it.

Questions people ask

Does the Slack MCP server work in ChatGPT or Codex?

Slack's MCP docs name Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cursor and Perplexity as partner clients, and not ChatGPT (read 2026-10-02). Slack's plugin installs in Codex, but there it adds skills only, because Slack has not wired the MCP server into Codex yet.

Can I use the Slack MCP server without my admin?

No. Only apps published in the Slack Marketplace or built internally by your organization may call it, and workspace admins approve those apps through Slack's normal app approval.
