Where every coding agent looks for agent skills

Coding agents read agent skills from a folder in your project. Claude Code reads .claude/skills/, Windsurf reads .windsurf/skills/, and 21 of the 78 agents that the open skills CLI supports share one folder, .agents/skills/: among them Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Cline, Amp, Kilo Code and Zed. So one copy of a skill in .agents/skills/ reaches all 21.

We read this table from the skills CLI, version 1.7.0, on 2026-10-01, and confirmed it with a test install of one skill (HashiCorp's terraform-test) into every supported agent, which wrote the skill into 55 distinct folders.

How to install one skill into every agent

The skills CLI installs a skill from any GitHub repository that holds SKILL.md files. It asks which agents you use, or you name them:

npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill terraform-test
npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill terraform-test -a codex
npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill terraform-test -a '*'

-a '*' writes the skill for all 78 agents. Add -g to install for your user account instead of one project. The CLI sends an install telemetry event unless you set DO_NOT_TRACK=1 or DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1.

Folders by agent

The project folder each agent reads, per the skills CLI 1.7.0. Global (per-user) folders differ by agent and are not listed here.

What the table means in practice

  • One folder covers most agents. If your team uses Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot, commit skills once to .agents/skills/ and every one of them sees the same files.
  • Claude Code is separate. Claude Code reads .claude/skills/, so a project that also uses Claude Code needs a second copy or a symlink. The skills CLI makes symlinks by default; add --copy to write real files.
  • OpenClaw reads skills/ at the project root, without a dot, so a folder named skills that you already use for something else will be read as skills.
  • A skill being installable is not the same as it working well. Some skills rely on one agent's features, such as Claude Code subagents or slash commands. Each skill page on CookiesForAI says so when the skill's own instructions depend on one agent.

How we checked

We read the agent list from the CLI's own code, then ran npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill terraform-test -a '*' -y --copy in an empty Git project and listed the folders it created. The table is rebuilt from that data file, so it shows the CLI version and date it came from. Download it as JSON.
