Neon MCP server
The Neon MCP server gives AI agents control of Neon serverless Postgres: create projects and branches, run SQL, inspect schemas, find slow queries and run migrations on a branch before applying them.

What the Neon MCP server does
The Neon MCP server connects an AI agent to Neon, the serverless Postgres service that is now part of Databricks and built on its Lakebase Postgres. The agent can list and create projects, create, reset and delete branches, manage compute endpoints and snapshots, run SQL or a transaction, list tables and describe their schemas, and get a connection string. It also covers newer Neon products such as Neon Auth, the Data API, functions and storage.
Neon's server builds on database branching for safer changes. A migration tool first applies a schema change on a temporary branch so the agent can test it, then a second tool applies it to the main branch once you agree. A similar pair finds slow queries, tests tuning such as new indexes on a branch, and then applies the result. Other tools explain query plans and compare schemas between branches.
Neon hosts the server at mcp.neon.tech with OAuth or an API key, and URL parameters limit it to read-only tools, one project or chosen tool categories. Neon says the server is meant for local development and IDE use and does not recommend it for production. The GitHub repo had 648 stars on 2026-10-01.

When to use Neon
- You want the agent to spin up a fresh Postgres database for a prototype in one prompt.
- You want schema migrations tested on a branch before they touch your main database.
- A query is slow and you want the agent to find it and try an index safely.
- You want a summary of all your Neon projects and what each one holds.
When to pick something else
- Production databases: Neon itself advises against using the MCP server there, because it can create, change and delete projects and branches.
- Other Postgres hosts: it manages Neon accounts through the Neon API, not any Postgres server.
What Neon needs
- A Neon account (OAuth) or a Neon API key
- Node.js 18 or newer for the npx setup commands
What the Neon MCP server costs
Free and open source under MIT; you pay only for Neon usage, and Neon has a Free plan and a pay-as-you-go plan.
Current prices: neon.com . We do not list prices: vendors change them often, so check the publisher's own page.
Questions people ask
Is the Neon MCP server free?
Yes. The server is open source and costs nothing; your Neon usage is billed as normal, and Neon has a Free plan (pricing page, 2026-10-01).
Can the Neon MCP server delete things?
Yes, with write access it can delete projects and branches. Connect with ?readonly=true or untick Allow writes during sign-in to keep it to read-only tools.
Other MCP servers for databases
- DBHub: DBHub is an open-source MCP server by Bytebase that gives AI agents SQL access to PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle and SQLite through one server with two default tools.
- MongoDB: The MongoDB MCP server gives AI agents access to MongoDB databases and MongoDB Atlas: run find and aggregate queries, inspect schemas and indexes, and create or manage Atlas clusters and users.
- Postgres MCP Pro: Postgres MCP Pro is an open-source MCP server that gives AI agents access to a PostgreSQL database, with schema browsing, safe SQL execution, EXPLAIN plans, index recommendations and database health checks.
- Redis: The Redis MCP server gives AI agents natural-language access to a Redis database: strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, streams, JSON documents, pub/sub and vector search indexes.
