Redis MCP server
The Redis MCP server gives AI agents natural-language access to a Redis database: strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, streams, JSON documents, pub/sub and vector search indexes.

Claude Desktop or any client with a JSON config (use the full path to uvx in Claude Desktop)

"servers": {"redis": {"type": "stdio", "command": "uvx", "args": ["--from", "redis-mcp-server@latest", "redis-mcp-server", "--url", "redis://localhost:6379/0"]}}For Redis Cloud or any TLS connection, use a rediss:// URL with your user and password. VS Code needs agent mode turned on (chat.agent.enabled). Redis recommends a Redis ACL user with limited rights for the agent.
What the Redis MCP server does
The Redis MCP server is Redis's own MCP server for working with data in a Redis database. It gives an AI agent tools for every main Redis data type: set and get strings with expiry, store objects as hashes, push and pop list items for queues, manage sets and sorted sets for tags or leaderboards, and add to and read streams with consumer groups. JSON tools store and edit nested documents by path.
Redis's server also covers newer uses of Redis in AI apps. Query engine tools create vector indexes and run vector similarity search, and hashes can hold embeddings. Pub/sub tools publish messages and read from subscriptions. A docs tool answers questions from Redis documentation, and a server tool reports database information.
The server is a Python package that runs locally with uvx or Docker over stdio; Redis says Streamable HTTP support will come later. It connects by redis:// or rediss:// URL, supports Redis ACL users, and can sign in to Azure Managed Redis with Microsoft Entra ID. The GitHub repo had 628 stars on 2026-10-01.
When to use Redis
- You want to look inside a Redis cache or queue while debugging, in plain words.
- You are building an agent that needs short-term memory or session storage in Redis.
- You want to create a vector index and test similarity search without writing client code.
- You use Azure Managed Redis and want Entra ID sign-in instead of passwords.
When to pick something else
- Production caches without a limited ACL user: the agent can overwrite and delete keys, so give it a Redis user with only the commands it needs.
- Clients that only speak HTTP: the server supports stdio only for now.
What Redis needs
- Python with uv (uvx), or Docker
- A Redis server or Redis Cloud database URL
What the Redis MCP server costs
Free and open source under MIT and works with any Redis you run; Redis Cloud, the hosted option, has a free database and paid plans.

Other MCP servers for databases
- DBHub: DBHub is an open-source MCP server by Bytebase that gives AI agents SQL access to PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle and SQLite through one server with two default tools.
- MongoDB: The MongoDB MCP server gives AI agents access to MongoDB databases and MongoDB Atlas: run find and aggregate queries, inspect schemas and indexes, and create or manage Atlas clusters and users.
- Neon: The Neon MCP server gives AI agents control of Neon serverless Postgres: create projects and branches, run SQL, inspect schemas, find slow queries and run migrations on a branch before applying them.
- Postgres MCP Pro: Postgres MCP Pro is an open-source MCP server that gives AI agents access to a PostgreSQL database, with schema browsing, safe SQL execution, EXPLAIN plans, index recommendations and database health checks.
