Obsidian Markdown

obsidian-markdown is Steph Ango's agent skill for writing Obsidian Flavored Markdown: notes with properties, wikilinks, embeds, callouts and block references that render correctly in an Obsidian vault.

Install Obsidian Markdown

Install the skill with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add kepano/obsidian-skills --skill obsidian-markdown

Or, in Claude Code, add the publisher's plugin marketplace

Terminal
/plugin marketplace add kepano/obsidian-skills

Then install the obsidian plugin

Terminal
/plugin install obsidian@obsidian-skills

Or paste this into your coding agent: Install the agent skill obsidian-markdown from github.com/kepano/obsidian-skills. A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first.

What Obsidian Markdown does

Obsidian Markdown is a skill in Steph Ango's obsidian-skills repository for agents that write notes into an Obsidian vault. Obsidian extends CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown with its own syntax, and the skill teaches only those extensions, assuming the agent already knows headings, lists and tables.

Its note workflow starts with frontmatter properties such as title, tags and aliases, then the body. Notes inside the vault are linked with wikilinks, including links to a heading or a block ID, while external URLs keep normal Markdown links, because Obsidian updates wikilinks when notes are renamed. Embeds pull in other notes, sections, images at a set width, or a single PDF page.

Callouts get their own section, with the common types such as note, tip, warning and bug, plus foldable callouts that start collapsed or expanded. Reference files list every property type, embed type and callout alias. The last step tells the agent to check that the note renders in Obsidian's reading view.

When to use Obsidian Markdown

  • You let an agent write or tidy notes in your Obsidian vault.
  • You want links between notes as wikilinks that survive renames.
  • You want meeting notes or summaries with callouts and tags Obsidian understands.
  • Your agent writes frontmatter that Obsidian does not read as properties.
  • You want images or a single PDF page embedded in a note at a set size.

When to pick something else

  • Obsidian Bases or JSON Canvas files: the same repository has separate obsidian-bases and json-canvas skills.

Which agents Obsidian Markdown works in

Steph Ango documents Obsidian Markdown for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Any agent that reads SKILL.md files, through the skills CLI. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode (we listed it with the CLI on October 1, 2026).
