Gmail (gws)

gws-gmail is the Gmail agent skill in Google Workspace's gws CLI repository: it lets an agent send, read, reply to, forward and triage Gmail messages through the gws command line.

Install Gmail (gws)

Install the skill with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add googleworkspace/cli --skill gws-gmail

Also install gws-shared, which holds login, flags and safety rules

Terminal
npx skills add googleworkspace/cli --skill gws-shared

Install the gws CLI, which the skill drives

Terminal
npm install -g @googleworkspace/cli

Or, in Gemini CLI, install the gws extension after running gws auth setup

What Gmail (gws) does

Gmail (gws) is one of more than 100 skills in the googleworkspace/cli repository, which builds a single gws command for every Google Workspace API from Google's Discovery Service. This skill covers Gmail. It gives the agent helper commands to send, reply, reply to all, forward, read a message's body or headers, show an unread inbox summary, and stream new mail as it arrives.

Beyond the helpers, the agent can reach the full Gmail API: drafts, labels, threads, messages, history and settings. Before calling a method, it is told to run gws schema on that method to see the required parameters, then pass them as JSON. Helper commands have their own small skills, such as gws-gmail-send and gws-gmail-triage, linked from this one.

The companion gws-shared skill sets the safety rules: never print tokens, always confirm with you before a write or delete, prefer a dry run for destructive actions, and optionally screen responses through Google's Model Armor. Output is JSON by default, with table, YAML and CSV available.

When to use Gmail (gws)

  • You want your agent to summarize unread email in your inbox.
  • You want a reply drafted and sent in the right thread after you approve it.
  • You want labels or filters managed from the terminal.
  • You want an agent to watch for new mail and act on it.

When to pick something else

  • Quick setup on a personal Gmail account: you need your own Google Cloud OAuth app, and unverified apps are limited to about 25 scopes, so the broad scope preset fails.

What Gmail (gws) needs

  • The gws CLI (a release binary, or npm install -g @googleworkspace/cli)
  • A Google Cloud project with OAuth credentials, set up with gws auth setup or the Cloud Console
