azure-deploy

Azure deploy

azure-deploy is Microsoft's agent skill for deploying an already prepared and validated app to Azure with azd, Bicep or Terraform, with error recovery, role checks and verified https endpoints at the end.

Install Azure deploy

Install this skill with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add microsoft/azure-skills --skill azure-deploy

Or, in Claude Code, install Microsoft's Azure plugin from Anthropic's official marketplace

Terminal
/plugin install azure@claude-plugins-official

Or, in Gemini CLI, install the Azure extension

Terminal
gemini extensions install https://github.com/microsoft/azure-skills

Or, in GitHub Copilot CLI, add Microsoft's marketplace

Terminal
/plugin marketplace add microsoft/azure-skills

Then install the Azure plugin in Copilot CLI

Terminal
/plugin install azure@azure-skills

The plugin and extension routes install all of Microsoft's Azure skills together with the Azure MCP Server and Foundry MCP. The skills CLI line installs only this skill's instructions, not the MCP servers it calls. In Codex, run codex plugin marketplace add microsoft/azure-skills, then install azure from /plugins.

Or paste this into your coding agent: Install the agent skill azure-deploy from github.com/microsoft/azure-skills. A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first.

What Azure deploy does

azure-deploy is an agent skill from Microsoft that runs the deployment step for an app that is already prepared for Azure. It owns the commands that change cloud resources: azd up, azd deploy, terraform apply and az deployment. It refuses to start unless .azure/deployment-plan.md exists with the status Validated and a filled-in validation proof, and it forbids the agent from setting that status itself.

The azure-deploy workflow has ten steps. The agent reads the plan, works through a pre-deploy checklist, loads the recipe for the plan's deployment type, and for Container Apps with a registry checks that the AcrPull role has propagated. It then deploys, applies post-deploy steps such as SQL managed identity and EF migrations, handles errors from the recipe's error guide, and confirms the endpoints respond.

After deployment the skill has the agent query Azure to confirm the assigned roles are correct and sufficient, then report every endpoint as a full https link. Destructive actions need the user's confirmation. Reference files cover troubleshooting, azd and Azure Identity in Python, .NET, TypeScript and Java.

When to use Azure deploy

  • Your app is prepared for Azure and you want to run azd up or azd deploy.
  • You want terraform apply or a Bicep deployment run with checks before and after.
  • You are pushing an update to an app that already runs on Azure.
  • A Container Apps deployment fails because the image cannot be pulled from the registry.

When to pick something else

  • Creating a new app or writing its infrastructure: the skill sends that to azure-prepare, then azure-validate, both in the same repository.

What Azure deploy needs

  • An Azure subscription, Azure CLI signed in with az login, and Azure Developer CLI signed in with azd auth login
  • A .azure/deployment-plan.md marked Validated by the azure-validate skill

Which agents Azure deploy works in

Microsoft documents Azure deploy for GitHub Copilot (VS Code, Copilot CLI, IntelliJ IDEA), Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode (we listed it with the CLI on October 1, 2026). See where each agent looks for skills.

The skill calls tools from the Azure MCP Server (names starting mcp_azure_mcp). The plugin routes install that server; with the skills CLI alone the agent falls back to the Azure CLI commands the skill also lists.
