React Native

React Native is Vercel's agent skill of React Native and Expo rules, ranked by impact: list performance, animations, native navigation and UI patterns for faster mobile apps.

Install React Native

Install this skill with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills --skill vercel-react-native-skills

Or install every Vercel skill at once

Terminal
npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills

Or paste this into your coding agent: Install the agent skill vercel-react-native-skills from github.com/vercel-labs/agent-skills. A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first.

What React Native does

The React Native skill is Vercel's set of best practices for React Native and Expo apps. It loads when an agent builds React Native components, tunes list and scroll performance, adds animations, or works with native modules and platform APIs. The rules are grouped into eight categories and ordered by impact, from list performance down to configuration.

In the React Native skill, list performance comes first: virtualize large lists with FlashList, memoize list items, keep callbacks stable, avoid inline style objects and use item types for mixed lists. The animation rules animate only transform and opacity, use useDerivedValue for computed animations and Gesture.Tap instead of Pressable for animated presses. Navigation uses native stack and native tabs over JavaScript navigators.

The React Native skill's UI rules prefer expo-image for images, Pressable over TouchableOpacity, native context menus and modals, and onLayout over measure(). Further rules cover state subscriptions and the React Compiler, wrapping text in Text components, and keeping native dependencies in the app package of a monorepo. Each rule file shows incorrect and correct code, and AGENTS.md compiles every rule into one document.

When to use React Native

  • You have a long list in your React Native app that stutters when you scroll.
  • You are adding animations with Reanimated and want them to run smoothly.
  • You are choosing between native and JavaScript navigators, menus or modals.
  • You keep your React Native app in a monorepo and native modules are not autolinking.

When to pick something else

  • You build for the web with React or Next.js: use React Best Practices.

Which agents React Native works in

Vercel documents React Native for any AI coding agent that reads Agent Skills, installed with the skills CLI. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode (we listed it with the CLI on October 1, 2026).
