Algorithmic Art

Algorithmic Art is Anthropic's open-source agent skill for generative art: the agent writes a short art philosophy, then builds an interactive p5.js piece with seeds and parameter sliders.

Install Algorithmic Art

In Claude Code, add Anthropic's skills marketplace

Terminal
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills

Then install the example-skills plugin, which holds this skill and Anthropic's other example skills

Terminal
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

Or install only this skill, for any agent, with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add anthropics/skills --skill algorithmic-art

In Claude.ai, Anthropic says its example skills are already available on paid plans: switch them on under Customize > Skills.

Or paste this into your coding agent: Install the agent skill algorithmic-art from github.com/anthropics/skills. A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first.

What Algorithmic Art does

Algorithmic Art is an Anthropic skill for making art with code. It loads when you ask for generative art, algorithmic art, flow fields or particle systems, and it produces two things: a written philosophy as a Markdown file and an interactive HTML piece. Its instructions tell the agent to create original work rather than copy existing artists, to avoid copyright problems.

With Algorithmic Art, the agent first names a generative art movement and writes its philosophy in four to six paragraphs. It also picks a subtle reference to your request to weave into the algorithm. Then it expresses that philosophy as a p5.js sketch with seeded randomness, so the same seed always draws the same image, and with parameters such as quantities, scales, angles and thresholds that you can tune.

The Algorithmic Art HTML file is self-contained and runs in Claude.ai or any browser, loading p5.js from a CDN. The agent builds it from the bundled viewer template, which keeps Anthropic's branding and a fixed sidebar: seed controls (previous, next, random, jump to a seed), sliders for the parameters, optional color pickers, and regenerate, reset and download PNG buttons. A second template shows how to structure p5.js code.

When to use Algorithmic Art

  • You want generative art such as a flow field or particle system without writing p5.js yourself.
  • You want to explore many variations of one piece by changing a seed and a few sliders.
  • You need a single HTML file of interactive art that opens in any browser.

When to pick something else

  • You want a static poster or print file instead of an interactive sketch: use Canvas Design.
  • You want a short animated GIF: use Slack GIF Creator.

Which agents Algorithmic Art works in

Anthropic documents Algorithmic Art for Claude Code, Claude.ai, Claude API. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode (we listed it with the CLI on October 1, 2026). See where each agent looks for skills.

The viewer template is built to show as an interactive artifact in Claude.ai; in any other agent you open the HTML file in a browser.

Algorithmic Art license

Algorithmic Art is published under Apache-2.0. Apache-2.0 comes from the LICENSE.txt in the skill's own folder (read 2026-10-01); the anthropics/skills repository has no root license file. In practice you may use, change and share the skill in any agent, commercially too, as long as you keep the license text and notices and mark your changes.
