neon-postgres

Neon Postgres

neon-postgres is Neon's agent skill for working with Postgres on Neon: connection strings, pooled or direct connections, migrations, branching, built-in diagnostics, autoscaling, scale to zero and search.

Install Neon Postgres

Install this skill with the skills CLI

Terminal
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-postgres

Or, in Claude Code, add Neon's plugin marketplace

Terminal
/plugin marketplace add neondatabase/agent-skills

Then install the neon-postgres plugin (Neon's skills plus the Neon MCP server)

Terminal
/plugin install neon-postgres@neon

Or, in Cursor, run this in chat

Terminal
/add-plugin neon-postgres

With the plugin routes, Neon asks you to sign in through OAuth the first time an MCP tool runs.

Or paste this into your coding agent: Install the agent skill neon-postgres from github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills. A skill can include scripts that run on your computer, so read its source first.

What Neon Postgres does

neon-postgres is an agent skill from Neon for Postgres databases hosted on Neon, which Neon now calls Lakebase Postgres. It tells the agent to reuse a DATABASE_URL already present in the prompt, environment or repo, and otherwise to pick or create a project with the Neon CLI or MCP server. A table decides between pooled connections, for web apps and serverless functions, and direct ones, for migrations, dumps, replication and LISTEN.

The neon-postgres skill gives driver choices per platform: node-postgres with Fluid compute on Vercel, node-postgres with Hyperdrive on Cloudflare, and Neon's serverless driver for edge runtimes. Migrations are managed as code through the project's ORM, tested first on a branch of production data and run over a direct connection. Branches are copy-on-write clones, each with its own compute.

For slow queries the skill maps symptoms to read-only neon inspect checks such as outliers, unused-indexes, locks, bloat and cache hit rate, with warnings on how not to misread them, and hands query and index work to a separate postgres-best-practices skill. Other topics include read replicas, logical replication, instant restore, IP allow lists, search, and how autoscaling and scale to zero work.

When to use Neon Postgres

  • You are connecting an app to Neon and are unsure whether to use the pooled or the direct URL.
  • You want to test a schema migration on a copy of production data first.
  • Your Neon database got slow and you want the built-in diagnostics run.
  • You want to know how scale to zero and cold starts affect your app.

When to pick something else

  • Starting a new backend with auth, files or functions: Neon routes that to its parent neon skill in the same repository.

What Neon Postgres needs

  • A Neon account or an existing Neon DATABASE_URL; the Neon CLI or the Neon MCP server for project and branch actions

Which agents Neon Postgres works in

Neon documents Neon Postgres for Claude Code, Cursor, Kimi Code CLI, Pi, Other Agent Plugins v1 clients. The open skills CLI also installs it into 78 agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode (we listed it with the CLI on October 1, 2026). See where each agent looks for skills.

The skill works through the Neon CLI by default or the Neon MCP server; the Claude Code, Cursor and Kimi Code plugins install the MCP server, the skills CLI line does not.
