What Prisma upgrade to v7 does
prisma-upgrade-v7 is an agent skill from Prisma that takes an existing project from Prisma ORM 6 to Prisma ORM 7. It ranks the breaking changes by impact: schema and generator changes, driver adapters and the module system are critical, while config and environment loading, removed features and Accelerate are high. Each area has its own reference file that the agent reads when it reaches that step.
The prisma-upgrade-v7 skill lays the upgrade out in ten steps. The agent updates the packages, chooses ESM or keeps CommonJS with moduleFormat set to cjs, updates tsconfig, switches the generator to prisma-client with an explicit output path, creates prisma.config.ts, installs a driver adapter such as @prisma/adapter-pg, and loads environment variables itself with dotenv. It then fixes imports and client setup and runs prisma generate.
The skill also replaces Prisma.validator with TypeScript's satisfies, moves $use middleware to Client Extensions, and notes that metrics were removed. It stops MongoDB projects early: Prisma 7 has no MongoDB connector, so those projects should stay on version 6 or move to Prisma 8 with the separate prisma-mongodb-upgrade skill.
When to use Prisma upgrade to v7
- You want to upgrade a project from Prisma 6 to Prisma 7.
- After upgrading you get an error saying a driver adapter is required.
- Your imports from @prisma/client broke after switching to the prisma-client generator.
- You use Prisma middleware or Accelerate and need to know what changes in 7.
When to pick something else
- MongoDB projects: use prisma-mongodb-upgrade from the same repository.
- New projects: Prisma's README says new setups now default to Prisma ORM 8, set up with its prisma-orm-setup skill.
What Prisma upgrade to v7 needs
- Node.js 20.19.0 or newer and TypeScript 5.4.0 or newer
- A SQL database such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQLite
